Introduction to Primary Health Care

The Introduction to Primary Health Care School (IPHC) is a five to six month course designed to train those with or without prior medical experience to impact nations, communities, and individuals through health care. Training is geared specifically for work where there is little or no access to health care, most often the developing world.
Every 3 seconds someone in the world dies from poverty related disease – over 80% of all these diseases are preventable. The IPHC will equip you in practical skills and health care knowledge to be able to make a significant difference in people’s lives.
The simple act of teaching a community to wash their hands at critical times can reduce the number of diarrhoeal cases by up to 35% and teaching how to recognise dehydration and treat it, will prevent numerous deaths.
Our aim is to give people tools to be able to bring God’s heart to the poor and needy and give hope to the hopeless by sharing God’s love in practical ways.
The main emphasis of the school is health education and prevention of disease, but we teach about curative care too.
Our logo is “Bringing Healing, Empowering People” and our mission is to bring physical, spiritual and emotional healing at the same time as teaching people how to equip themselves and be able to pass on knowledge and skills to others.
You do not need to be a trained health care professional to work in primary health care. If you have a heart to reach the poorest communities on earth in a practical way, then apply!
The lecture phase consists of 12 weeks of intensive study, but interactive and fun too! The class times fit into local school hours, so as to be open to parents, but there will be much personal study required outside of these hours during the afternoons and/or evenings.
Topics covered include:
Basic anatomy and physiology of the 10 body systems in order to understand the disease process;
The most common diseases found in the developing world with an emphasis on prevention, and how to treat them too – such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, diarrhoea, rehydration and many others;
How to present health teachings;
Practical skills – wound care, vital observations and patient assessment;
Mother and child health including emergency childbirth;
Immunisation and the 6 target diseases – TB, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and polio;
Nutrition and malnutrition
Active listening and counselling skills;
A certified First Aid Course.
The course also includes some online studies with Global Health eLearning Centre developed by USAID Bureau of Global Health.
Following the completion of the lecture phase, the field assignment/outreach provides an opportunity for trainees to use their newly acquired skills in a developing nation. This phase of the school is an integral part of the course and is coordinated alongside existing local works and government initiatives. We work alongside health professionals and other primary health care workers in the locality and trainees have the opportunity to apply and test the principles and skills they have learned in the classroom.
This year, we are planning towards outreach in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Previously we have sent IPHC teams to Uganda, the Philippines and Mozambique. We are often involved in rural and urban communities in health education and mobile clinics. We sometimes live amongst the people in order to understand the practical problems that they face, and know how to equip them and demonstrate God’s love in practical ways which opens their hearts to the gospel .
Our aim is to impact communities leaving lasting change and to empower and challenge people to continue in what they have learnt.
